Honored to be having this moment. We had a lovely chat with Marcellas Reynold, actor, author and documentary producer. We first met at an event at the Chicago History Museum where he was discussing his previous book Supreme Models but now we hear there is a new book:
Tell us what inspired your newest book, Supreme Actresses: Iconic Black Women Who Revolutionized Hollywood?
As I finished writing my first book, Supreme Models, the idea for Supreme Actresses was born. The same theory inspired both books. We must document Black history so it is not lost since white culture does not exalt Black achievements in the same manner as it praises its own. As a person of color and a gay man, I know firsthand the need for diversity and inclusion. Children of all races need to see positive images of those like themselves. “If you see it, you can be it.”
What would you say are the main themes of Supreme Actresses?
The main themes of Supreme Actresses are belief in oneself, dedication, discipline, and humility. These women are in service to something bigger than fame, each opening the door for the next. It’s about uplifting themselves, each other, and their race.
