Designer Feature: Alicia Perrillo

I know some exciting things are lining up for the brand but for those of our readers who aren’t familiar with Alicia Perrillo, can you tell us about your journey in the fashion industry and what inspired you to become a fashion designer? I know it’s a cliché, but I’ve wanted to be a fashion designer since I was a small child, cutting up my own clothes to make clothes for my Barbies and My Little Ponies. I have always been obsessed with clothes and style; unfortunately, I didn’t have the confidence to pursue it until I was an adult. After a visit to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s fashion department, I finally mustered up the courage to make my portfolio and apply. My senior thesis collection, Spectrum, was selected to be shown at Vancouver Fashion Week in 2017, and I’ve been showing and making new collections ever since.

Your designs often tell a story with fabrics. What inspired your creative process when designing the latest collection? My latest collection, Secrets Whispered, is inspired by the bonds of friendship. Each look tells a story of an important friend in my life who has inspired me. When designing each look, I thought of the colors that reminded me of that person, the things that we love to share, and the feelings they evoke. My design process for this collection was heavily based on the emotions and memories that I associate with my dearest friends. Once I have the mood, I work on gathering imagery, building the color story, sourcing fabrics, and doing design drawings until I am happy with my ideas.
